DESCRIPTION
“One of my favourite moments in the original Christmas story is when the wise men ‘entered the house where the child and his mother, Mary, were, and they fell down before him and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh’.
“There have been many funny variations of this moment in children’s nativity plays, and you will read of some of these in this volume. But notice the word ‘treasure chests’. The wise men offered the best items from their store of gems – in the original Greek (the language of the New Testament) the word is ‘thesauros’. That’s a great thought!
“I’d like to propose that this book is a thesaurus, a treasure chest, of twenty years of lovingly accumulated wit and wonder to do with the Christmas story. Someone has said, ‘to perceive Christmas through its wrappings becomes more difficult with every year’. Maybe with the help of this book something of the real meaning of Christmas will shine through.”
The Rev. Dr Mark Stibbe is Vicar of St Andrew’s, Chorleywood, Herts, and author of many popular and scholarly books. His compilations with J. John (A Box of Delights and others) have been particularly warmly received.
