DESCRIPTION

Bread and Water relates the personal story of one woman's attempt to surrender her life to God. In 1980 Jennifer Haines felt a strong spiritual calling to maintain a presence of prayer at the Rocky Flats Nuclear weapons plant in Colorado. This book chroncles her spiritual journey over the next ten years, much of it spent in a variety of jails and prisons, often in solitary confinement and subject to varying degrees of brutality, as a result of her persistent trespassing at Rocky Flats and her refusal to cooperate with the penal system. Yet Bread and Water is neither an expose of prison conditions, nor a rhetorically high-pitched chronicle of resistance. It is instead a remarkably modest yet moving story of one woman's attempt to live consistently by her spiritual lights, affirming her freedom and human dignity under all circumstances, and by her example inviting others to do the same.
