Overholt['s]...argument in this volume is modest: "research by anthropologists who have studied relatively modern cultures can often be useful to persons interested in understanding the culture in ancient Israel"....a welcome addition to the "Guides to Biblical Scholarship" series. He presents a cogent rationale for drawing upon the methods and theories of cultural anthropology in biblical interpretation, and provides several compelling examples of the process. The book also provides a helpful synopsis of the author's own work in understanding the social roles of Israelite prophecy.
