What does it truly mean for humans to be made in the image of God? In God's Many-Splendored Image, Nonna Verna Harrison, a respected scholar in Eastern Christian thought, offers a fresh and noteworthy explanation to being "made in God's image." In addition, she expounds upon what it means to grow in His likeness. The early church believed that the true image of God in which we are created is at the center of who we are as humans. Drawing on the wisdom of the desert mothers and fathers, along with the heritage of Eastern Christianity, Harrison makes the case, therefore, that the divine image can be seen not just in one or two aspects of the human identity but throughout all facets of our lives. Harrison further challenges the popularized views of humanity as being inherently bad by proposing an alternative that is grounded in early Greek Christian sources.
