DESCRIPTION

Jon Michael Spencer's bold book steps into the intersection of African American life and Christian traditions. He tracks ways in which distortions within the biblical and theological traditions - notably their biases and myths about gender, race, and class - have infected even black Christianity. His learned and eloquent plea for a more critical Christianity has important implications for all churches.

Here, Spencer examines the ways in which systemic distortions about race, class, and gender within the Christian tradition have infected even black Christianity and its hymnody. The author eloquently calls for a deeper understanding of such distortions and their underlying Biblical traditions. Includes text and music for six original hymns.
